Hi guysHope you could help me again. Just acquired the AD-F810 off Ebay, supposedly 'used', arrived today. However, when I just tested it, FF and REW are working, but play is not. When Play is pressed, it does spin, but very fast, yet there is no sound. But the counter is going. Other lights working.I don't think the head comes up at all, tested it with door open (by pressing on the leaver thing in the top right corner of inside cassette area when door open) and I can see the wheels spinning but heads along the bottom don't move.
(To be honest I am not sure if that is how is suppose to be anyway or not )Any chance you could let me know what it could be and could I fix it myself somehow? I need a plain English please, my girly self is ready to attempt the fix, but I don't know the terms too wellOr should I just return the deck to the owner while I still can? Thanks in advanceGee(So now I have 3 x non working 810s ).
Hi Gee,What you are not having is the activation of the transport and so that can mean a cam switch that is dirty, a dead motor in the cam system or maybe even a broken belt- I have not studied the service manual on this unit yet so I am being general. If you don't know how these things work how do you expect to have a chance to fix one?
Some may seem easy to Technician who have been doing a lot of decks but to beginners- a belt replacement is NOT the only answer to the problem. It probably should be seen by a professional to get your best chance to have it working again. Hi Sam thank you for your response. We all start from somewhere, as I'm sure you did too once upon a time, so nothing wrong with trying. I do know a thing or two about audio stuff (on the outside) and have fixed number of things, just by learning from the internet advice/youtube, so I think I have a pretty good chance, should someone wish to help me. If you could check the service manual and let me know your thoughts it wouldbe much appreciatted. The manual is here: The download link is hidden underneath the image titled 'get manual' in tiny letters.I still hope that some of you knowledgeable guys with plenty of experience could let me know what it might be causing this fault and how difficult/easy is to fix it.
Sadly I can't afford the technician otherwise believe I would have already done it.RWise - thank you for your comment, I have emailed the seller, and am waiting for response. You are right about not opening it up, so I didn't and won;t unless someone can tell me exactly what the fault is and if I can fix it.So please guys, someone surely had the experience of a tape deck 'play' spinning too fast without the sound?Thank you in advanceRegardsGee. Don't know if the mech block of your F810 is the same as the mech block of my F880. If so, this may be quite the same that occurred to my F880 when i received it and, if so, the fix needs few seconds.on my F880, the mech went out of synch probably because the shipment (or because of ageing belts too?) then the heads and rollers didn't go up in place properly so that i couldn't hear any sound and the tape ran too fast (because it was driven only by the reels and without the help of the capstan/roller).Funny that also the capstan motor didn't run at all during the 'out of synch' situation. And, moreover, the heads block didn't even go down completely so that i couldn't even eject the tape. I thought i had a hopelessly broken deck until, few minutes later, i found the easy fix.the fix?i did simply rotate the flywheel by hands (the right one, if i remember correctly and i don't remember if i did rotate it CW or CCW. Try both ways) until i heard a small 'click' which meant that the position of the heads block was again re-set to the right position and immediately the deck started working properly again. When, later, i did completely restore my F880 by dismantling the mech block quite completely, i also noticed that on the inner of the right flywheel there is a gear which moves the heads block up and down.
Then no mode belt on this deck. The only rubber parts (on the F880) are the two capstan belts (it's a double capstan mech) and the idler tyre to move the reels.try it. It needs only few seconds and i hope the same is true with your F810 too.CHEERS,Vince. I find the remark about 'you surely had a deck that did this' a bit of a generalization. Every deck is different, and has different behavior when broken.
Again, fix it with the seller, and open it up on his permission. Looking in it will not hurt it unless you drop a screwdriver in it while it's on, which will short the PCB board. If you're not going to open it up, then don't bother.Hi Peter. Thank you for your response, but I cannot see from your response what you suggest to try if I do open the deck?I agree, every deck is different, just like every computer is different, yet they often do have similar/same symptoms and often a fault can be easily pinpointed by knowing the symptoms/errors, just like with the computers. Previously, people here pinpointed belts problem within minutes of me posting the 'symptoms'.
This forum is full of people with great knowledge of tape decks, many are tape mechanics professionally or as a hobby, so 'generalisation' that someone, on Tapeheads, has had the experience of the same fault, is based on likelyhood and potential. Thank you for your response, but I cannot see from your response what you suggest to try if I do open the deck?I agree, every deck is different, just like every computer is different, yet they often do have similar/same symptoms and often a fault can be easily pinpointed by knowing the symptoms/errors, just like with the computers. This forum is full of people with great knowledge of tape decks, many are tape mechanics professionally or as a hobby, so 'generalisation' that someone, on Tapeheads, has had the experience of the same fault, is based on likelyhood and potential. And hope!Look around what the issue might be.
Belts are just always first to be pinpointed to the issue due to them mostly failing, but it's no guarantee that's the problem. Logitec momo drivers for mac. I'm really crossing fingers your solution will work, especially as seller swears that it was working well before posting, so who knows how the parcel people treated the box, and how many times it was thrown around, so no wonder something slipped/got stuck.i strongly hope you have the same issues as mine and, really, unless there are any warranty seals on the deck's chassis applied by the seller, i wouldn't be worried to remove the chassis cover and to simply rotate the flywheel by hands.
You just cannot break anything by simply doing that and you don't need to unmount just anything inside the deck.what i also noticed is that, when my belts were still the old ones, i happened to have the same issue occurring again when simply pushing the control buttons rapidly (i.e. Play, stop, FF or REW without even waiting a fraction of second before pushing the other control button) or also when the 'timer' was not in stop position so that, while turning the deck on, the transport was immediately asked to make some work.
And, anyway, the movements during the shipment may also cause that issue. But now, with new belts on it, i can push the control buttons as rapidly as i wish and without seeing that issue anymore. (and, if it's just that issue, then the fix is very easy anyway).CHEERS,Vince. You are my star! It worked!Opened the cover just now, looked at the flywheel and could immediately see that the front belt has actually slipped off and was stuck in between the wheels. I attached the picture.
So as you mentioned, I turned the wheel slowly holding the belt gently in place and slowly and gently got it back onto the wheel - deck works like magic now yey!Thank you so much Vince, I really appreciate your detailed help and support! You have been very kind, and saved me money for repair and trouble of returning it!Deeply grateful! Much regardsGee.
